That they need to be listened to, understood, supported and included. But sometimes it feels like these are just words. I wonder how many children and young people ask themselves: Does anyone really notice me? Does anyone understand? Am I important?

MTÜ Sa Suudad was born from the desire to stand up for those young people who have not been stood up for enough, especially in those vulnerable moments where support would have been needed the most. For young people who have had to become adults before they were ready. Who have experienced violence, neglect, bullying or simply have been repeatedly disappointed in adults*.

I hope with all my heart that in the future, fewer and fewer children will have to experience pain, fear, loneliness, and hopelessness. But if that does happen, please let's not punish them for it. Let's not punish them for not having learned safe ways to deal with their feelings. That their ways of surviving are sometimes incomprehensible, uncomfortable, or even scary to us.

We don't have to accept the actions of children and young people, but we can try to understand, why the young person is behaving this way and what it really expresses. Only then can we offer support that really helps, not just focusing on the visible behavior, but helping the child or young person themselves understand what is going on inside them, and opening the door to the possibility that life can be different.

Over the years, young people have taught me more than any school or training. They have shown me how much wisdom there is in children and young people. Every person is truly an expert in their own life – even if age sometimes makes it seem like that can’t be the case. They have shown how much intelligence and resilience there is in those who society sometimes labels as “problematic”. They have taught me how far a young person can go if they have at least one person by their side who truly believes in them.

And I believe that it is the responsibility of all of us: to create an environment where young people can feel safe, important, and belong. Only then can they open up, listen, talk, and make choices that truly support them.

Adults, please don't be afraid of the pain of young people. If you can't say or do anything, just be there. Notice. Just be there. Listen with your heart. And see their strengths: every young person has them. We must learn to notice them and bring them out so that the young person can start to believe for themselves.

The young people I have had the privilege of meeting have also expressed that we do not have to be able to do or know everything. Ask what the young person needs, what they think, what they dream of: let's think together. Be supportive, not corrective. Believe in yourself and help them believe in themselves that they are valuable, capable and can influence their own lives.

And to you, young people, I wish you not to lose faith and hope. Even if in these most difficult moments it is hard to believe that the situation can get better, I believe (and have experienced) that it will. Know that you are not alone. Even in the most difficult situations, someone can come along who will not give up – so let them approach you at that moment, help yourself to be helped.

And let's be honest, I make mistakes too. Not everything I write about always comes out right. Like we're all human, with our own experiences and wounds. But I try. I really try to do what I believe in. And if I'm wrong, I apologize. I start over. Really.

As long as there is life, there is opportunity and hope. Happy Children's Day!

Enelis in the City
Founder and board member of MTÜ Sa Suudad

* And please let us not forget that children and young people who have experienced adverse conditions in childhood (e.g. violence, neglect, etc.) need understanding and support even when they have reached adulthood. Becoming an adult does not mean that the pain and wounds disappear – especially if they did not receive effective support during their youth. Emotional maturity often does not go hand in hand with biological age: a young person may be an adult, but there may still be a child living within them whose needs remained and are still unmet. They too need to be given space for understanding, effective support, security and the restoration of trust.

Today is Children's Day, although in reality every day should be a day when we stand up for children and young people.
