From August 28 to November 8, something that an art layman like me would not recognize as art at first glance will be displayed in the courtyard of the Kumu Art Museum \u2013 containers, a bus stop, a playhouse, an advertising board and an empathy bank. As you get closer, it becomes clear that each object carries the story of a young person. This is how \u201cHoia mind kaisus. Monument elluj\u00e4\u00e4misele\u201d is displayed, Marta Raspberry<\/strong> and Yuri Krutii<\/strong> an exhibition that has been created with young people who have experienced neglect and violence, which has been the root cause of their ending up in an institution like a closed children's home. <\/p>\n\n\n

Why should this exhibition concern all of us, not just those who come into contact with young people in their work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because these young people are already among us, just often invisible. We see the hood, but not the child under it. We see problematic behavior, or explosive reactions, escapes, self-harm, irreversible actions, but often not the person behind it, their dreams, fears, and what they have had to go through to get there. Risk-taking behavior does not arise out of nowhere. It is always the result of something, often a way of survival when no one has taught them other skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young people participating in the exhibition have told their stories through music videos, sound works, installations, films and sculptures. One young person talks in a video about how his cries for help went unnoticed. Another has created a sculpture of a dog that speaks of trust, which is the hardest thing to regain when adults have repeatedly let him down. A third tells what it means to escape from a closed institution when there is nowhere to go home. These are not made-up stories on a museum wall. These are young people who have dared to make their most vulnerable experiences visible so that we can better understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And understanding is exactly what we need most. The brain is neuroplastic. This means that behavior that today seems dangerous or incomprehensible can change if a young person receives enough security, consistency and has at least one adult who believes in them. Punishment and rejection generally do not bring about change, quite the opposite. They rather reassure the young person that they are not understood or listened to, that they are not important. All of this in turn leads to a loss of faith and hope in themselves, in adults and in the possibility of a safe world. And when hope disappears, these are the most dangerous states that can arise, because there is nothing left to lose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come to the exhibition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I invite you to the exhibition. By the way, it's completely free! Bring someone with you to talk about it later, because the greatest impact is only made when what you see becomes a conversation, and the conversation changes the way we talk about and think about young people. Every young person is at least one caring adult away from changing their story. Maybe that adult is you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the exhibition, KUMU, in collaboration with us, or MT\u00dc Sa Suudad, is organizing an audience and educational program. The first opening program was on 29.08, where young people themselves spoke about their experiences and what really supports young people who are having difficulties. In the afternoon, various experts in the field discussed the topic of what kind of society a young person who may exhibit risk behavior needs. The next day of the educational program will be in September, so stay tuned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
